In the 1890s, the United States was beginning to behave like a world power. The country was linked by railroads from coast to coast and north to south. Idaho, Wyoming and Utah became states. The Indian Territory was quickly being opened up to non-Indian settlement. By the end of the decade, the U.S. was recognized as a power to be respected when the Spanish-American War ended with the U.S. taking control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippine Islands. Elsewhere in the world, the European powers were battling each other and the native inhabitants for control over most of Africa and much of Asia. Also in Asia, war between Japan and China breaks out. It is ended with China recognizing the independence of Korea and Japan ceding territories back to China. This small map is over 100 years old and was made using the wax-engraving map printing process pioneered by Rand McNally. This process created high-quality, low-cost maps and and forced many competitors out-of-business.
